Speed Test Ookla vs Google Speed Test

Posted: Oct 30, 2021
I have been taking a look at Speed Test websites in the past several weeks and have noticed that there are actually multiple sites out there offering speed tests. Some people swear by one site, others swear by another site. I decided to run a few tests on the different speed test sites to see how they compared against each other.
The first speed test site I decided to compare was Ookla's Speedtest.net. It has been the most recommended and used of all the speed tests out there, so it is a great place to start.
This comparison above compares Google's own speed test website (Google is one of the largest and most popular search engines, and they also keep track of user data) against Ookla's speed test website (Ookla is also an online company that deals with monitoring internet data speeds, among other things). As you can see the numbers are actually pretty close to each other. Google's average download speed is around 10% faster than Ookla's. Google's average upload speed is around 20% slower than Ookla's.
Google vs Speedtest.net
Next, I decided to compare Google against Speedtest.net because it has a larger user base and many people swear by its accuracy over all others. If you look at the comparison above you will see that once again they are very similar. Basically within 4-5 Mbps of each other for both download speeds and upload speeds on average.
Google vs Testmynet
The last test I did was with TestMy.net which is a lesser known speed test site, but still fairly popular. The numbers are definitely quite different from the previous two comparisons though. As you can see in the chart above, TestMynet's average download speeds are around 25% slower than Ookla's and Google's averages. TestMy net's upload speed falls almost 50% below that of Ookla and Google!
It should also be noted that Speedtest.net actually takes about twice as long to run on some computers compared to other sites, while Testmynet is one of the fastest tests out there (in my experience).

The following are screenshots of the speed test results for this article:
Testmynettest.com vs Speedtest.net vs Google speedtest : Testmynettest.com, Ookla (speedtest) and Google (Google is one of the largest and most popular search engines, and they also keep track of user data). As you can see there is very little difference between them all. I believe these numbers are pretty accurate. TestMyNet- SpeedTest.net -If you want to run more than 2 tests click "advanced settings" which will allow you to run as many tests as your computer can handle. This is useful for testing different servers at different locations. Ookla - If you press the "Play" button a 2nd time, it will start a new speed test but load the results from the previous speedtest into that particular server/location, so you can compare speeds against just one location/server. Google- Just do not hit play again after running your first test or it will overwrite any results about other servers and locations. When comparing download speeds things are pretty much even across the board for all 3 sites being tested (-within 5% of each other).
