Determine the Causes of Excessive Engine Oil Consumption in Audi by Walnut Creek Mechanics
Posted: Dec 08, 2021
The main purpose of the oil in your Audi is to lubricate all the engine components and keep it running smoothly. When the engine is running under normal conditions, the oil consumption of the car is fixed at a certain level.
In general, the engines of modern cars will consume less than half quartz of the oil every 5,000 miles of driving. But, due to many reasons, the engine will demand more oil faster than normal; as a result, you have to supply more oil to the engine. Otherwise, the engine would seize up due to lack of oil and require costly repairs.
If the engine oil consumption is above the given level, then it needs to be addressed immediately. For preventing the problem, you have to change the oil at its recommended interval. The following points define the causes behind excess oil consumption in Audi.
Worn gaskets
In an Audi, the gaskets are preventing the leaks of oil by sealing all the components together. When the gaskets are worn out, the oil is leaking out on the ground or burned off in the combustion chamber. Moreover, these problems are also arising for other reasons such as the worn valve seals and valve guides.
On the other hand, the intake manifold gaskets in a car also cause vacuum leaks and create oil leakages in the oil pan. As a result, the engine will require more oil for performing its normal operations that may lead to excess consumption of oil.
Broken piston rings
Moreover, the piston rings are an important part of the internal combustion engine that can seal the combustion chamber to prevent the loss of gases to the crankcase. Due to the piston rings, proper tension is unable to be maintained in a car, therefore the oil and hot gases pass by them.
Throughout the process, the hot gases are drawn underneath the piston. Over time, the oil is burning and carbon is deposited on the cylinder, rings, and pistons. In turn, it will destroy the piston assembly completely and consume more fuel than required. So, it's always advisable to replace the piston rings to prevent further problems.
Burning oil
The main cause behind the excess oil consumption in the car is the engine is burning more oil than required. When the oil gets into and past the piston rings and ring belt areas, the engine will burn more oil. If all these parts are clean, then the engine will consume less oil and deposit lesser carbon.
Due to any reason, if these parts are getting dirty and covered with carbon, then the rings are unable to move the oil freely and burn the oil excessively. So, it's better to use good quality oil in the engine to keep the piston rings and ring belt clean and decrease the chances of burning more engine oil.
High engine vacuum
When the engine vacuum is increased in modern cars, it will automatically increase the engine RPM, compression habits, and valve overlap. As a result, the oil ring will seal at both the top and bottom sides of the ring grooves for preventing the oil to pass around the rear and sides under deceleration.
So, when it happens in your Audi you will notice that the engine is consuming a lot of oil and producing a lot of smoking. So, it's always advisable to use slide sealing piston rings for reducing the oil consumption requirement of the engine.
Too much oil in the crankcase
When too much oil is found in the crankcase, you will notice that the oil is burned too aggressively. If you found extra oil on the lower ends of the connecting rods in a pressure-lubricated engine, then an excessive amount of oil can be flowed onto the cylinder walls and get its way to the combustion chamber.
At this point, you have to check the oil level of the car by inserting the dipstick. In this way, you will get an accurate reading of the oil level; otherwise, you will add too much oil to the crankcase. Left it untreated for longer may lead to excess consumption of oil in the engine.
Way to fix the oil consumption in the car
For preventing too much oil consumption in Audi, you have to use top-quality oil as per the recommendation of the car's manufacturer. When you notice an oil leak, try to fix the oil leaks as soon as possible and replace the piston rings and valve stem seals if required.
If you are currently living in Walnut Creek and found that the engine of the Audi is consuming more oil than required, then take it to a reputed mechanic for determining the real causes behind the excess oil consumption and fix it properly.
