5 Unique Ways to Show Someone You Love Them on Christmas

reasons love

I love Christmas with my kids, but I also think it is intensely commercialized. Do my kids need a thousand more toys to add to their collection? Do I need one more white elephant gift I have no idea what to do with? Nope, we really don’t.

That’s why I believe it should be more about showing love to your tribe on Christmas. Of course, this can be done through gifts. But there are other creative ways to do it too. Here are a few unique ideas.

1. Tell Them All the Reasons You Love Them

Make a list of the best reasons you love your partner (or kids). You can find 100 reasons I love you here for ideas (+ a free printable). Give the list of Christmas Day and watch them light up.

2. Make Something for Them

Whether it’s cookies or a handmade ornament, when someone physically makes something it’s always from the heart. This is a gift your recipient will remember for much longer.

3. Give an Experience Gift

Take your loved one somewhere amazing and spend quality time together. These are where unforgettable memories are made and they mean much more than the plastic things that get thrown in the closet. Here are some really cool places to go:

  • A monster truck rally
  • The symphony or concert
  • A Broadway play
  • A sporting event
  • An amusement park or water park
  • A new restaurant you’ve never tried

The sky is the limit depending on the person’s interests and what they are comfortable with. Pick something that shows your recipient you were thinking about what they love.

4. Do a Kind Deed

Sometimes, it’s not about the gifts. Bringing your loved one a coffee or getting up with the kids to let him/her sleep in is a small thing that speaks volumes for the love and affection you feel for someone.

5. Be Present With Them

And finally, in today’s society we are seldom truly WITH the ones we love. Instead, we are on our phones, watching tv, thinking about work, or thinking about the million to-do list items that we should be doing. So, the greatest gift you can give the people you love is the gift of presence. Here are some ideas to show your family you are present:

  • Actually watch your daughter do that cartwheel for the five thousandth time
  • Play a game and really get into it
  • Do a puzzle and focus on it
  • Force yourself to taste your food and drink and be there for all of the sensations
  • Ask your family questions and stay with their answers. Get to know them on a deeper level.

When you find your mind straying, (which is perfectly normal) listen to your breath for a moment and then come back to them with your mind. Leave your devices in another room if they are too much of a distraction.

In Conclusion

Christmas is about love. That can be through gifts or actions, but it doesn’t HAVE to be the huge pile of stuff no one will care about in 6 months. So, this year, enjoy giving something that means a bit more.
