It’s easy to find yourself defaulting to the couch with the remote and your partner by your side when you have any down time. After all, life can be full of work, family obligations, and extra activities. It’s hard to be creative and plan meaningful activities with your partner. So the next time you are bored, instead of trying to decide what streaming service to watch, try some of these free ideas that will help you put the remote down and start connecting with your partner.

Go for a hike

Hiking is not only a great activity to do to get moving together, but it will provide the time and opportunity to talk and reconnect. Check your area for any local hiking trails or plan a weekend hike at a well-known trail. If a hiking trail is not an option, go on a walk and explore a new local area. Taking a walk through an arboretum or park is another good option. Check out good questions for couples guaranteed to start some enjoyable conversations while you hike.

Learn how to play a new game

Chances are you may have a chess set or another classic board game in the cabinet that you have never taken the time to learn to play. If not, ask a neighbor or friend to loan you one of their favorites. Have a deck of cards? Research a card game you can play together. Have some fun learning a new game with your partner.

Look for local festivals, concerts in the park, and trivia nights

Many cities have free festivals and concerts when the weather is nice, and often bars have weekly or monthly trivia nights. Look for free events happening in your area and make plans to attend. In addition, many local vineyards offer free entertainment on weekend nights. Be intentional with this idea and research what is happening in your area.

Enjoy a DIY spa

Create a spa atmosphere in your own home by putting some relaxing essential oils in the diffuser, turning down the lights, turning on some music, and getting into comfy robes. Take turns giving one another massages. Make a simple DIY face mask using ingredients you can find in your own pantry. Then relax!

Find a local volunteer opportunity

Serve a meal at a homeless shelter, volunteer to help at a school event, or find a community garden to help care for. There is a lot of research to support the emotional, mental, and physical health benefits of volunteering. In addition, this can be a bonding activity for you and your partner. Chances are you will leave feeling better than you did before you started.

Take some intentional time to reconnect with your partner with these free activities instead of defaulting to the couch. You won’t regret the time spent with your partner AND you will create new shared adventures and experiences.
