With more than 1300 species that total comes to 2000 including the subspecies, India is a rising star among birding destinations. There are many hotspots that birders prefer to visit. Although Bharatpur is the favorite destination so is the Corbett National Park in the State of Uttrakhand.

India has the largest living population of tigers in the World. It is home to over 3000 adults and hence it has become the favorite destination for big cat watching. There are a number of tiger reserves in the country that have crossed over 50 and more are being established. Thanks to project tiger and the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 the species have been saved and the numbers are growing.

Searching for Birds and Tigers

Both activities usually take place together on safari in the reserves and National Park but in many destinations like Bharatpur and Little Rann of Kutch there are no tigers so the sole interest of the birders is birds. There are many enthusiasts who are only interested in either of the wild forms solely. In fact, a good number of enthusiasts only watch birds and are not interested in big cats. But in the case of big cat lovers, there is interest in the avian species.

Corbett National Park Uttrakhand

With more than 500 species that inhabit the tiger reserve, Corbett is a hotbed for ornithologists. The species include winter migrants, Paleartic migrants, and altitude migrants. When winter up on the Himalayas is harsh due to extreme snowfall avians of higher reaches come down to Corbett and the plains. Thus the tiger reserve is heaven for bird lovers. The destination in a 500 sq. km area is home to over 100 big cats and provides the finest opportunity to tiger lovers.

Bandhavgarh National Park MP

The reserve is home to not only tigers but also to ancient structures dating 200 years back. It is home to 75 tigers and the sightings are very high. There are two hundred bird species at Bandhavgarh and both the big cats and the avians could be seen on a game safari.

Kanha National Park MP

Kanha is home to the swamp deer but more than 100 tigers live in the park. The reserve is one of the best places for birding as well with more than 250 species including winter migrants. The tiger sighting is very high as well and a large number of big cats can be seen.

These destinations are ideal for birding and tiger sightings and they are becoming better. There are many tour operators conducting tours here. You can also arrange for travel as well. You must book safari permits in advance before they are exhausted.
