Seeing the Magnificent Historical Sights of Salzburg

Transfers from Salzburg Airport to the city centre are but the first stage in what will be your discovery of this magical and enchanting city. Here’s just a brief overview of some of the major sights.

The Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche)

This is a magnificent Baroque church built between 1694 and 1702 in the New Town (new, of course, by the standards of the rest of the city!). You'll more than likely pass very close to it on your transfers from Salzburg Airport, but it pays to return on foot and explore it both outside and inside.

The Tanzmeisterhaus (Mozart Residence)

As suggested by the name, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his family lived here from 1773-80. The house was heavily damaged at one time, but has since been immaculately restored, allowing you to get a sense of the atmosphere that inspired some of his greatest works.

Salzburg Cathedral

The cathedral is a superb structure with its origins actually going back to the 770s. It was once the Roman Basilica of what was the city of Juvavum, but over the centuries the Roman remains, plus those of earlier medieval buildings, have been subsumed into what is now a predominantly early 17th century building.

Fortress Hohensalzburg

This is arguably the most iconic and staggeringly impressive of the many images of the city and towers above the town on the cliffs. (You may see it from a distance you come in on transfers from Salzburg Airport.) It’s often claimed to be, with some justification, the best-preserved 11th century fortress in Europe, and has a huge range of attractions to visit.

Mozart's Birthplace

Don’t get this confused with the ‘Mozart Residence’ mentioned above. This is the house where he was born in 1756. Today it’s been converted to a charming museum dedicated to the musician's life and covers three floors. It’s very atmospheric and evocative and displays a number of important mementos of his extraordinary life.

The Museum of Modern Art Salzburg Mönchsberg

This museum shows that the city doesn’t only look back to the past but also appreciates and values much more modern tastes too. It’s spread over two buildings, although they’re both relatively close to each other. You’ll find a wide selection of some of the most famous names around in modern art.

The Regal Residence

Originally occupied by the Prince-Archbishops of the city until the 19th century, this is essentially a sumptuously decorated palace. Wander around its rooms and you’ll get some idea of how important this city was at one time in the past.

A brief list of this nature just can’t do justice to the city’s wonders and there are literally dozens of other places to visit. In fact, the drivers providing transfers from Salzburg Airport might well have a few thoughts of their own about some of the slightly more 'off the tourist track' attractions frequented by the locals. It’s worth asking their advice but above all, get out there and explore this wonderful city for yourself.
