Piezoelectricity was found by two French scientists in 1880. It is the phenomenon in which materials develop an electric field with subject to pressure or force, and conversely demonstrates mechanical deformation when subjected to an electric field. The evolution of piezoelectricity has now given the manufacturers with efficient technology to produce effective industrial acoustical elements.

Piezo sounder converts the electrical signals into sound like a speaker. It can be used to play musical tunes or create sounds. It is generally used to generate electric sounds directly from a microcontroller without any amplification circuit. It is used to generate sound beeps. With the availability of piezoelectric components in the market, there is huge demand of piezo acoustic generation devices for household purpose as well as industrial applications. Most of the products that are available are piezo buzzers, piezo speakers, piezo discs, etc. They are light-weight, durable but are in simple designs,

The Piezo Sounder comes in two types of piezoelectric diaphragm sound generation: External-driven and self-driven oscillation technique. The External-driven operates at any oscillating frequency and features easy generation of sound by non-stable multi-vibrator circuit. The self-driven resonances at the frequency corresponding to the minimum acoustic impedance of the diaphragm which helps in derived loud sound output through positive feedback oscillation circuit. They consume low power, and has no contacts, hence less noise and highly reliable.

The applications of the sound components are in telephone ringers, personal computers, printers, keyboards, microwave ovens and confirmation sound of various audio equipments. The microcontrollers are widely used in microwave ovens, ACs, toys, cars and other equipments. The external-driven piezo sounders are used in digital watches, electronic calculators, telephones and also other types of equipment. The self-driven types only require simple circuit and DC power supply. As it uses resonant system, these are ready for large sound volume-enabled alarms like gas alarms, burglar alarms, smoke detectors, game machines, etc.

Piezo speakers are best for synthesizing voice or melodious tones. As the voice synthesizing techniques with the Integrated circuits and LSIs have briskly progressed, customizable voice synthesizing have been implemented in clocks, calculators, vending machines, translating machines and many more. In terms of features, these speakers are way too much efficient than the usual electromagnetic type speakers. These are light-weight and have absence of noise due to no mechanical contacts. The speakers have high impedance and consume less power.

The piezo speakers are widely used in the automobile industries (like car horns, etc.) as it produces ultra loud sound pressure and allow customized voice synthesizing. These are RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directives) compliant. They have various advantages over the usual loudspeakers like: opposed to overloads that typically destroy the most high frequency drivers and can be used as crossovers due to the electrical properties. The uses of high-quality piezo elements are able to create loud sound volumes and wide frequency range needs. They serve in reliable and effective operation in different variety of equipment and ambient conditions.
