There is a whole Surah dedicated to this night in which Allah explains that ‘Qadr’ is the night in which the whole Quran was revealed by Him. It is this night when angels and souls descend by Allah’s approval for every decreed matter and there is nothing but peace until dawn.

This definition of the ‘night of Qadr’ is extracted from the five verses of Surah al-Qadr and the explanation of these verses is fascinating. Another verse from Surah al-Dukhan explains the meaning of this night in which Allah says that every affair that is to happen, is specified on this night. As per several scholars, the good and evil, lifespan, and sustenance, of every person is written in that night and cannot be changed until the next night arrives. However, we’ll first try to understand more about this night from Hadith as a secondary source.

  • The Night of Qadr’ in Hadith
There are several authentic hadiths on the night of Qadr, however, we’ll share the most vital ones that explain the meaning, significance, and signs of this night.Meaning:

Hazrat Anas bin Malik stated that when Ramadan arrived, the Prophet of Allah P.B.U.H told the companions that the blessed month had commenced and within it lies a night greater than a thousand months. He emphasized that anyone who misses out on its blessings is missing out on all goodness, and only a truly ill-fated person would be deprived of its benefits.

The authenticity of this hadith can be confirmed by the five verses of surah al-Qadr which confirms its meaning in light of hadith as well.

Time

Abu Salamah asked Abu Sa`id Al Khudry about what Prophet P.B.U.H had talked about the night of Qadr. Abu Sa’id replied that once the Prophet of Allah P.B.U.H performed I`tikaf on the first ten days of Ramadan and the companions did the same with Him. Angel Gabriel came to the Prophet P.B.U.H and told that the night He is seeking is ahead of Him. So, Hs performed the I`tikaf in the next ten days of the month and the companions did the same with Him. Gabriel again came and said that the night He is seeking is ahead of Him.

Then the Prophet P.B.U.H delivered a sermon in the morning of the 20th of Ramadan saying that whoever had performed I`tikaf with Him should continue it. He was shown the Night of "Qadr", but had been made to forget its date, but it is in the odd ones of the last ten nights. The Prophet P.B.U.H further told that He saw a dream in which He was bowing down in mud and water. The sky was clear at that time but suddenly a cloud came and it rained. The Prophet P.B.U.H led companions in the prayer and Abu Sa’id himself saw the traces of mud on His forehead, confirming the dream.

Signs

Hazrat Jabir R.A narrated this hadith that the Prophet P.B.U.H. told that He had seen the Night of Qadr but then He forgot it. He said it occurs in the last ten days of Ramadan and is a pleasant night, neither hot nor cold, with a bright moon illuminating the stars. The devils are restrained during this night, until dawn.

In another hadith, Abu Hurayrah R.A recounted that the Prophet P.B.U.H. told about the Night of Qadr. It is the 27th or 28th night and the angels on that night are more than the number of pebbles on the earth.
