GOAL
The goal of The Picture Book is to introduce simple phrases of conversational Hebrew organized around picture words and everyday topics. The contents page on page five lists all of the topics in the workbook.
FEATURES
The Picture Book introduces simple conversation by:
- using a limited number of words presented in picture form; vocabulary is referred to as ‘picture words’.
- using a limited number of phrases which are repeated on a number of pages
- introducing everyday topics
USING THE PICTURE BOOK
- Topics in The Picture Book can be followed in order or you can pick any topic of interest.
- Teachers should always model correct pronunciation of the Hebrew questions, phrases and vocabulary when introducing a topic using a whole language approach. A picture depicts the meaning of the Hebrew word rather than a translation. The emphasis is on speaking and experiencing spoken Hebrew rather than on reading. For this reason, The Picture Book can be used by readers and non-readers.
- Where possible, the items for the topic can be brought into the classroom to bring the conversation alive, using an ulpan style.
- All of the picture word vocabulary can be found grouped by letter at the end of the workbook.
- Have fun speaking Hebrew!
