Consider a Destination Wedding in Salzburg
Posted: Apr 20, 2015
The Mirabell Palace in Salzburg is regarded as one of the most romantic settings in Europe for a wedding, and the city itself is ideal for a honeymoon. According to the poet Hermann Bahr, "Salzburg is always beautiful, although you think it looks the loveliest every time you're there." So, if you're considering a destination wedding, there are many reasons it should be near the top of your list.
Imagine a sunny summer’s day, with a horse-drawn carriage trotting through the city, or a magical white winter wedding - the Mirabell Palace offers a special setting for any season. The city also has a great infrastructure for visitors, and from the ease and convenience of your Salzburg airport transportation to the excellent luxury accommodation available, you'll want for nothing for the most important event of your life.
Mirabell Palace
The Mirabell Palace offers a wonderful venue for civil marriages, which can take place in the Baroque Marble Hall. Wedding photos can be taken on the Angel Staircase (which features dozens of little cherubs) and, also, in the Mirabell Gardens, with the fortress and historic buildings as a backdrop.
The Palace has a very romantic history, which makes it the perfect place for a wedding. It was built under the name of "Altenau Palace", in 1606, for Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as a token of his love for, his royal mistress, Salome Alt. Wolf Dietrich and Salome had 15 children together in the palace, 10 of whom survived. After Wolf Dietrich's death in 1617, the palace was renamed "Mirabell" by his successor, Markus Sitticus von Hohenems.
Mirabell Palace has since undergone a number of developments and the Marble Hall is now considered one of the most beautiful wedding halls in the world. Nowadays, the palace houses the offices of the city's mayor and the municipal council. Meetings, awards ceremonies and concerts are often held there, too.
The Mirabell Gardens
The gardens were redesigned and remodelled numerous times over the years before they were opened to the public in 1854. (You may pass by them on your Salzburg airport transportation and get a first glimpse.) Two significant features of the gardens are the Hedge Theatre and the Dwarf Garden. The Hedge Garden was created between 1704 and 1718. It is located in the main part of the gardens and is one of the oldest hedge theatres north of the Alps. The Dwarf Garden dates back to the time of Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach, and features a number of misshapen creatures made of white Untersberg marble.
