Earring is a jewellery that mankind adorns in their ears. Although there is no record in history to substantiate when and where this practice of earring has started however it is for sure an old practice. As the excavations of the relics of the Egyptian, Inca, and the Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilizations has felicitated the use of earrings during that tenure. Currently, there are varieties of earring available in the market with different styles, made in different metals and also engraved with different gem stones. In fact both the regular and virtual markets are filled with designer gold earrings for women. However in India an earring is not just a mere piece of appreciation but has a cultural value that is imbedded in the society.

In India, an earring is both an ornament and spiritual reflector. In this country it is common to find both men and women to adorn earrings not only for style but also for the cultural and spiritual aspects. In Hinduism ear lobes are consider to be symbolic of spiritual guidance. Thus it is not surprising that men with big ear lobes are considered to be wise and spiritually strong, for an example Buddha. Thus, explaining the reason of the emphasis on earring and ear piercing. In Hinduism it is also believed that the ears are the path through which the soul exits the body thus ear piercing is a symbolic method of soul purifying. The ear piercing is a ritual that is commenced when a kids around 3 to 5 years old. It is a part of Hindu sacraments is called karnavedham, in some culture it is performed on kids of both the gender.

As mentioned above in India, earrings are being adorned since centuries irrespective of the gender fact. During the earlier days an earring used to be the sign of a man’s status and only King and his minister’s wore gold and silver earrings. Among the women it’s a prevalent old culture to wear earrings for both beautification and also for the culture affiliation. It is consider inauspicious for Hindu married women to not to wear earrings as earrings are also symbol of marriage. Similar to men, since ancient times, earrings are part of a women’s showcasing the society of her family wealth and societal status.

Currently, most of the earrings are adorned with only the fashion and beauty point of view. There numerous unique intricate work and designer gold earrings for women and men too. Thus proving that although the culture aspect of adorning an earring is no more relevant but earrings are still an intrinsic part of the fashion code.
