Posted: Jun 20, 2015
Ujjain is said to be one of the 7 holiest places of the Hindus. Located on the banks of River Kshipra, the place has numerous mythological connotations. Often referred to as Shiva’s land, this ancient city has been associated with legendary figures such as Kalidasa, Ashoka, Vikramaditya, Brahmagupta and Varahamihira. In the recent times, there has been an added interest among tourists to visit this place. So let’s have a look at some of the most interesting places to visit in Ujjain.
Mahakaleshwar Temple
The famous Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Mandir is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is held as one among the twelve 'Jyotirlingas' in India. The magnificent 'shikhara' along with highly stylized facades evokes a strong spiritual sentiment in anyone who views it. It is a place of arcane amazement and reverence for the people. Unlike the traditional 'lingams', the 'shivalingam' of the Ujjain Mahakaleshwar temple is believed to be a 'swayambhu', i.e. born of itself. The whole temple is split into 5 levels and houses that are adorned with sculptured idols of different Hindu deities, including Shiva.
Bhartrihari Caves
The Bhartrihari caves stand on the banks of River Kshipra, near Ujjain’s famous Gadkalika Temple. Named after the well known sage 'Bhatrihari', these caves stand as a testimony to India’s traditional wealth.
Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir
The Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir is among the most revered landmarks in all of Ujjain. The temple is a worshipping place for Ganesha, the Hindu god of Prosperity and Wisdom. It is located near the reservoir of Mahakaleshwar temple. The temple enshrines a huge ornate idol of Ganesha, which is widely believed to be among His largest sculptures. The Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir is also the place that has the only five-faced or 'panchmukhi' idol of Lord 'Hanuman'. This temple now also serves as a well known training center for astrology as well as the Sanskrit language.
Ujjain Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela in Ujjain is one of the most well known festivals celebrated in this city. Pilgrims from all over the country come to Ujjain to bathe in the holy water of the sacred river.
