In Tamil, ‘moon aar’ means ‘three rivers’. Munnar is located at the confluence of three rivers, Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly. Munnar, a mesmerising hill station of Kerala, is in Idukki district. Popularly known as ‘the Kashmir of South’, Munnar is located amidst mist-covered mountains. Munnar is located at the foothills of Anamudi with an altitude of 1,600m to 1,800m above the sea level. The evergreen forest of Munnar was the popular summer resort of the former British rulers. Kerala is very famous for its natural beauty and Munnar is the beautiful hill in the God’s own country. This region is very famous for its tea plantations. Plus, Munnar is also a popular honeymoon destination for newly-wed couples. There are ample of hotels in Munnar, visitors can choose according to their preference.

Exotic species of flora and fauna, the green mountains and the wide range of sports activities make Munnar the hottest destination of Kerala. Munnar also offers wildlife safaris in Eravikulam National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Palani Hills National Park, etc. The best time to visit Munnar is from August to May.

Places to visit in Munnar :

Tea Gardens: Majority of the hills are almost covered with tea plants which make it look like a green city. Because of this lush green tea plants, Munnar is also known as the ‘Tea City’. Tourists can buy tea from Kannan Devan Hill Plantation.

Lakes: There are several lakes and dams near Munnar. Tourists can enjoy boating in the vast lakes.

Flower Garden: Rose garden is a popular spot located in Mattuppetty. Here you will see different varieties and colours of roses. Mattupetty is about 13 km away from Munnar town and a popular destination for trekking.

Spice Garden: Visit spice gardens to see the raw coffee beans on coffee plants and the exotic trees of spices and herbs.

Sunset Point: After a day full of visit to different places in Munnar, watching the sunset from the hill top is a beautiful experience.

Local Market: Visit to the local market is a must. Here you will get various spices and dry fruits and you can shop different flavour teas.

Munnar is a place from where you will return with some good photographs to cherish forever. Cochin, Coimbatore and Madhurai are the nearest cities and are well-connected by rail and air to the other parts of the country. Bus services are available within the states and taxis are also there for sightseeing. Every year, Munnar witnesses a good crowd of tourists.
