After the changes in the pattern of Cat 2015, IIMs has again managed to surprise us with yet another alteration. This time, the changes are in the selection criteria and processes of the IIMs. So, the students should look forward to major changes and a lot of shockers.

Some of the IIMs have introduced new admission policy for screening out students for their programs. The GD/PI sessions have been altered. The GD session has been replaced by a WAT- Written Ability Test or essay writing and the PI has been given a higher weight-age, from 30 to 40 marks. IIM-Ahmedabad was the first to remove GD from their selection process. IIM-Banglore, followed by some other IIMs replaced GD with Essay writing.

The selection process for the IIM-Lucknow is in two stages. The First stage is to qualify for the WAT and PI sections. A merit list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in CAT, graduation, 10+2, and the work experience, combined together. If the candidate makes it through the merit list, he then has to attempt WAT, followed by PI. WAT carries 10 marks and the PI carries 40 marks. The final short listing will be done on the basis of combined marks from both the stages.

This change in the selection process can be quite beneficial for the aspirants as not all aspirants are good at group discussions. They may have adequate knowledge regarding the topic but may not be good at the discussion process or public speaking. Through this change, many aspirants will get an opportunity for the personal interview session, increasing their chances to get into the institute. PI is a better way to judge a candidate’s knowledge on particular topics than GD.

Further, the minimum cat cutoffs for the sections has been set as 85 percentile and 90 percentile overall. Further, the minimum academic performance criteria have been removed by the IIMs, which is a major relief factor for the candidates. From this year onwards, IIMs aims to provide gender and stream diversity. Candidates will be shortlisted from all the main streams as well as from the diverse groups. IIM-Trichy has reduced their weight-age of the personal interview from 17% to 15%.

So far, these changes in the selection procedure prove to be in the favor of the aspirants. They provide a better chance to the candidates to get into an IIM.
