Everyone who attends our invigorating Barre exercise class knows the satisfaction that comes with it; you’ve pushed yourself to a new limit, and improved your skills. But if you’re not giving your body the right recovery fuel, you could be detracting from your workout! Here’s our dream smoothie, perfect to help your muscles repair and energy stay high after your energising Barre class workout.

Blueberry Protein Shake:

After a great workout, a shake or smoothie is a convenient and quick way to provide your body with proper nutrition. Blueberries are antioxidant rich, and helps to prevent muscular damage from a workout, while bananas provide your body with potassium, which our body loses through sweat and dehydration, causing muscle cramps. With added protein from powder, your muscle fibres can repair quickly while your energy stays up, but the humble chia seed will add protein too - not to mention fibre, Omega-3 fatty acids, and a variety of micronutrients. With the addition of coconut water, renowned as ‘nature’s Gatorade’, you can replenish your body's natural stores of electrolytes, which we sweat out during exercise.

-200ml Coconut Water

-1 Large Banana

  • cup Blueberries

-1 scoop Protein Powder (whey is the most common powder, but many vegan options, such as pea and brown rice, offer similar benefits)

-1 tsp Chia Seeds

Optional Extras:

-Spirulina, wheatgrass, barley grass, and chlorella are all fantastic ways to cram more nutrients into your smoothie, and can be found in green mix powder forms.

-Coconut cream or yoghurt can thicken up the smoothie, but it’s up to your taste. Low-sugar yoghurts can offer calcium and probiotics, with extra protein, while coconut cream is a vegan alternative with fibre, minerals including selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous, as well as vitamins B1, B3, B5, B6, C, and E.

Don’t forget water:

The importance of water in our lifestyles cannot be underestimated. From aiding the transportation of lactic acid from our muscles, to preventing cramping, fatigue, and dizziness, water should always be on hand before, during, and after Barre.
