Energy loss is inevitable for industries and so the high level of energy consumption. The nature plays the role to the scavenger to nullify the impacts of the significant use of energy. However, ever-increasing industrialization is contributing high level of energy consumption and therefore a systematic approach to reduce energy loss, energy consumption by establishing controls is the need of time with the help of implementing ISO 50001 energy management system.

Energy Management System (EnMS) - ISO 50001 Certification refers to a system used by an Organisation to manage its activities, product or services in such a way to minimize or eliminate the significant energy use. More explicitly, the EnMS is that part of the overall management system viz. organizational structure, planning activities, job descriptions and responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources which is necessary for developing, implementing, reviewing and maintaining the organization's Energy policy and objectives and establish energy performance indicators.

Evidently, Energy Management System is not a Hi- Tech mechanism to address Energy issues of an organisation. Basically ISO 50001 energy management system is a management system consisting of three components namely:
  1. Design or development of elements of ENMS
  2. Documentation and
  3. Implementation
The ISO 50001 energy management system is required to satisfy different stakeholder e.g. employees, shareholders, regulatory authorities, customers and general public as well. Also the ISO 50001 system is required to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations related to energy. What is the Goal of ISO 50001?
  • To develop an international standard for Energy Management Systems Specifies core requirements for EnMS.
  • To incorporate the EnMS into the overall management system of a company.
  • To co-ordinate corporate functions such as planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources.
  • To develop, implement, achieve, review and maintain the energy policy and objectives.
  • Designed to facilitate auditing of EnMS core elements.

The overall aim of this international standard is to support Energy saving and prevention of loss of energy in balance with socio - economic needs. However, it is not intended to be used to create non-tariff trade barriers or to increase or change an organization's legal obligations.

Why ISO 50001 certification is required?

The certification / registration process will only be applicable to significant energy use areas but cover all the departments for Energy management system. The company has to find out energy base line, make objectives and targets related to Energy issues for long run and achievement for the energy performance indicators. Below the reasons are given for ISo 50001 certifications.
