Posted: Mar 18, 2014
Heading to Menorca? Vacation for even a few days on this small yet perfectly formed Balearic island and the wish list of even the fussiest holidaymaker can be fulfilled!
If, like many, you're looking to gain some much-needed rest and relaxation, you're most certainly coming to the right place. This gorgeous island reveals its awe-inspiring beauty through nature, its fascinating history and the genuine hospitality of the local people.
A unique culture
Menorcan culture is primarily Spanish but with a lot of other Mediterranean influences - something highly apparent in the language and customs of the locals. There is a diversity not often found within such a relatively small geographical area, but the islanders identify primarily as Menorquin. As a truly unique island with a clear identity, this oneness is expressed through the distinctive landscape, cuisine, dialect, music, customs and crafts.
A unique sense of relaxation
In a nutshell, relaxation and enjoying life to the fullest is the primary priority on Menorca. Vacation on this lovely island and you'll discover everything seems to be geared towards that. An insider's view of the local lifestyle reveals an attitude that’s a healthy and refreshing change from the materialistic lifestyle often encountered in a popular holiday destination like this.
Ask any local what their philosophy is, and it will most likely be some version of "Don’t live to work, but work to live." Of course, on the island, a large segment of the population work in tourism, meaning it is quite seasonal - work increases during the peak of summer, and when the visitors decrease it's time for the local to wind down. However, even during the busy times, the island is pervaded with a general sense of unhurriedness, which is a delight to harried and stressed out visitors who arrive to Menorca. Vacation here for even a short time and that subtle ambience will become apparent.
The five F's: family, friends, food, fiestas and fun!
Following on from the above, one of the things that immediately strike any visitors to the island is the tangible community spirit. The relaxed pace of life and small size of the island means that families and friends are never more than about fifteen minutes' drive away from each other.
In a nutshell, food and fun are how these close-knit communities celebrate their closeness - mealtimes are central to the daily activities and, on a much larger scale, this focus is celebrated in the many fiestas that take place on the island throughout the year. If you're lucky enough to be heading to Menorca, vacation here to coincide with one of these colourful events and you can be a part of a fun-filled celebration of the feast days of various saints. It's a true privilege for an outsider to witness and participate in one of these occasions – they are usually a loud, rowdy display of everything Menorcan, and invariably great fun for adults and children alike.
