Installation of Cameras by NHAI at Toll Plazas to Augment Smooth Traffic Flow
Posted: May 07, 2018
Traffic congestion at the toll booths is a very common occurrence which often times lead to causing hindrance to the normal traffic flow. In order to combat that issue, the National Highways Authority of India is soon going to administer and successfully implement video surveillance system for real-time mapping of the vehicle flow through the toll gates in the country. There has been no fixed date mentioned for the initiation of the scheme but the project is currently in progress and will be successfully implemented in the coming six months in 10 major toll plazas around the country. The organisation is also ensuring that they will extend the same to 200 toll plazas if the pilot run is successful in the first phase.
In this project, each of the toll plazas is going to be administered with hi-tech cameras which are going to provide with real-time feed to the command and control rooms located at the different regional offices around the country along with one at the NHAI headquarters. The surveillance is going to be 24x7 and round the clock to ensure maximum efficiency of work during times of emergency. When contacted the concerned officials, they stated that the execution of the work is in progress and will be functional in the upcoming six months. NHAI has also connected all the regional officers with 100 Mbps internet connectivity.
Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, Chief General Manager (IT and Highway Operations) of NHAI in a recent interview stated that the cameras are going to provide with pulse feedback and time stamped pictures to the concerned National Highways Authority of India Command Control Rooms and Regional office command room every 30 minutes or so. The prior would be maintained during normal traffic rush but the system is going to switch to video mode during heightened traffic congestion where the queuing increases beyond an imaginary amount. The camera will start streaming videos at regular intervals integrated with alarms and alerts. The streaming is expected to last for 30 minutes, following which necessary emergency steps would be taken to ease the traffic flow.
Apart from these, the drone agencies have also been integrated with efficient internet connectivity to ensure an effortless survey of the ongoing projects. These drones and the geospatial technologies are going to provide the regional offices and headquarters with the continuous updates on the ongoing construction of the road and highway projects.
In order to sophisticate the process, even more, the Union Minister of Roads Transport and Highways, Mr Nitin Gadkari stated that NHAI is soon going to sign an agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation which has its own Traffic Management Centre installed with the latest audio-video technology for the best traffic management system. The technology they use is installed with 4View Processors which enable the personnel to witness 70 images all at one go along with viewing the entire highway network on the screen. Deploying such technology at the toll plazas around India will ensure efficient surveillance and smoother traffic flow at the plazas.
