Mistakes To Avoid When Setting Up Commercial Wireless Network
Posted: Apr 17, 2014
Wireless access points are specially configured devices on wireless local area networks. The access points helps in the transmission of wireless radio signals. These points are not only used to support public internet hotspots but are also required to extend Wi-Fi signal range of internal business networks. Wireless network offers efficient and reliable services but building it is not so simple. If you’re thinking of installing wireless network for your business, make sure you avoid the common pitfalls mentioned below.
Overloading The Wireless Router
Usually, entry-level wireless routers are used to set up the network. But as the business grows, the consumer grade routers get overloaded by high-throughput appliances like NAS or IP cameras. Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict if wireless routers can endure heavy usage of business network. But if there is unexplained slowness, then the best solution is to set up a standalone network switch and wireless access point. The local network’s speed can be increased by devolving some regulars to the access points which will lower the burden on the router’s processor.
Under Provisioning The Wi-fi Network
Another common mistake, frequently made, is relying on only one access point regardless of the network load. Installing multiple access points reduces the risk of blockage. Another way to reduce the burden on the wireless network is to transfer Ethernet-ready devices to wired networking whenever feasible.
Wrong placement of wi-fi access points
The position of access point is crucial for smooth working of the network. Placing it near cupboards or metallic fixtures will weaken the wi-fi signal. Parts of the office that are blocked by three or more obstructions will experience non-existent signals.
Using router’s Default channel
Using the router without bothering to change the default channel often causes interference that may degrade the performance of the wireless network. To avoid this situation, it is better to change the channel when you set it up. This process is easy as there are only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, 11. The locations with multiple wireless networks may need to experiment with overlapping channels.
Ignoring the 5 GHz band
If the router offers simultaneous dual band, make sure your 5GHz radio is enabled. The 5GHz shorter range facilitates the use of additional AP’s high density deployments with less risk of interference.
