There are few cities north of the Alps that offer such an amazing range of history, culture, business and shopping like Salzburg. When you travel on the transfers from Salzburg Airport into the heart of the city, you will begin to see why it’s considered so special.

The area has likely been inhabited since the Neolithic Age and it played an important role in trade (the city's name means ‘salt castle’), religion and well into the 1900s with roles in the World Wars. Today, transfers from Salzburg Airport will take past some of the most historic places in the city - including the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you make an itinerary and return on foot, take time to visit some of the city’s most popular museums, such as the Haus der Natur, the Cathedral and the Open Air Museum.

Haus der Natur

Known in English as the Museum of Natural History, the Haus der Natur is a massive, high profile museum that you are likely to catch a first glimpse of if your transfers from Salzburg Airport take you by the popular Museumplatz area. The museum was founded in 1924 and today houses many important cultural and artistic exhibits. The Space Hall features a life-size moon landing diorama, while the Science Centre features exhibits that showcase various aspects of human and animal development. While there, you can also visit the Reptile Zoo, which houses some 200 animals in 56 terrariums. Spend the rest of your time in the Aquarium, which is considered to be one of the finest in Central Europe. With 36 tanks, it houses water animals that inhabit the Mediterranean, the local waters and the Amazon – it's a must-see for children and animal lovers.

The Cathedral

Once you have gotten to grips with the science of the city, head to the Cathedral, which you are likely to have past by on your transfers from Salzburg Airport to your accommodation. This stunning church was built in the 17th century in a Baroque style, and stands on the spot where the original church was founded in 774 AD in the Old Town – right next door to a famous museum of classical art. The bell tower of the cathedral is particularly interesting; it has seven bells, two of which date back to the early 1600s, and one modern one that is the second largest in Austria.

The Open Air Museum

Located about 15 minutes west of the city, you probably won’t get to see the Open Air Museum as your take the transfers from Salzburg Airport, but it is a truly unique site and one well worth taking a trip to explore. The museum features 100 original historic buildings and the collection tells the story of the history of the city over the past six centuries. From farmhouses, to taverns and steam engines, the Open Air Museum is an unforgettable place to visit and is truly unlike anything else you will see in Europe.
