Why Do Most Telemarketing Professionals Quit After A Few Days?

Posted: Jul 25, 2015
Across countries, industry types and business verticals, the attrition rate of employees is a matter of huge concern for all companies. There are two predominant reasons for the concern – one, the lack of talented and experienced professionals on whom the company spend so much on training and grooming and secondly, if the talent or the trained professional joins the competitor of the company that couldn’t retain the talent for some reason.
The case is same for telemarketers or telecallers, who are an integral part of any modern company that has some product or service to sell or answer to the queries made by their customers and prospects. Companies spend considerable time, energy and money to train candidates that they perceive as most suitable for the job.
More often than not, the attrition of such professionals doesn’t necessarily mean that they join a rival organization for a salary hike. Rather, it is observed that telemarketers quit their jobs and switch to entirely new profession within a few months of joining a company for the aforementioned role, and as such, they make the choice extremely consciously, after having tasted quite a few monthly salaries in their previous role.
In such cases, it is important for companies and organizations to think deeply on their approach and methodology of hiring candidates for telemarketing jobs. Hiring managers and top management of such companies must sit together and chalk out an action plan to plug the hole, so that the reason behind the loss incurred by companies due to the high attrition can be weeded out.
It has commonly been observed that during the hiring process, the person responsible for hiring people for the role of telemarketers tend to adopt the superficial rules and not dig deep enough to judge the inner personality traits of the candidates who apply for the job.
This sort of mentality and lackadaisical attitude results in wrong hiring, although the wrongdoing might have roots in the mentality of the top management itself. Most companies do not pay enough attention and spend time during the hiring process, because they tend to think that for the so called low-profile role of a telemarketer, it is not worthy spending much resource during hiring.
Usually, companies want to judge the presentation skills and fluency of language of the telemarketers during the hiring process. However, they miss the most important aspect – the real intention and the attitude of the candidate towards the given role. The most important factor that contributes to the stability of candidates for the position of telemarketers is their knack for conversation in a natural manner, such that they won’t get tired of repeating the same script again and again, day after day, and would be able to manipulate and make changes in the pitch according the requirements of the customer and the personality of the caller herself.
Also, the candidates must possess an attitude of serving people, who are customers or prospects for organizations they look forward to join. This is one quality that cannot be imbibed by training and has t be natural. Telemarketing professionals, and for that matter even answering specialists, must have the correct frame of mind and the attitude of ‘always happy to help others’. Otherwise, they will soon be tired of replying to the queries, listen to the grievances and negotiate the prices within the guidelines provided by the company. All of these, without the natural ability, can never be cultivated and put into use. Thus sooner or later, candidates tend to quite their job which they think is a waste of their time and energy and don’t even pays enough to tolerate the pain associated inherently with the role.
